Season 1 of Netflix’s Squid Game quickly became a global phenomenon, inspiring everything from memes & Halloween costumes to multiple real life spin-offs, as well as earning positive reception from critics & general audiences.
With such immense success under its belt, many wondered whether season 2 would be able to repeat the same level of success, or even measure up in terms of quality.
Fast forward to today, roughly two weeks after season 2 premiered, and it’s officially the 3rd most-watched program in Netflix history, behind season 1 of Squid Games and Wednesday.
Squid Games 2 is doing well in terms of viewership, there’s no doubt about that, but has it managed to maintain the quality that made it such a juggernaut in the first place?
Yes. It absolutely has. Read on below for my thoughts on what makes a second season just as good as the first, and why it’s absolutely worth watching!
Takes a couple episodes to really get going, but quickly catches up to the captivating intensity of S1.
Just as emotionally engaging as season 1 thanks to strong performances and poignant themes like desperation, debt, mortality and greed.
Season 2 is equally thrilling as season 1 thanks to a return to the games & fresh story elements like new games, perspectives and characters.
From the captivating nature of the games, to the vibrant colours of the facility they’re held in and the colourful wardrobe for players and workers, season 2 continues to succeed at keeping your eyes on the screen.
The story doesn’t progress in the same way season 1 does which helps it maintain that same feeling of shock and surprise throughout, but especially at the end of the season.
Season 2 takes longer to get (back) to the games, has less episodes, & finishes on a cliff-hanger. These are all a lil frustrating, but given where S2 ends, it looks like S3 will start with its foot on the gas and you don’t feel short changed because S2 is such an engaging, entertaining watch!
Overall, I found Squid Game season 2 just as good as its first season despite my ridiculously high standards. From performances and story progression, to production design and the way it left me anticipating the 3rd season equally as much, if not more, than I was looking forward to this one! Again, Netflix’s Squid Game finishes another season as must-watch TV.
